On Friday, May 16, 2014, the Department of Logotherapy at the prestigious Moscow Institute of Psychoanalysis awarded Eleonore Frankl her second honorary doctorate.  The ceremony was held in the magnificent Natural History Museum in Vienna.  Dr. Frankl’s first honorary doctorate was conferred at North Park University in Chicago in 1993.

Mrs. Susanne Martin and Mr. Karl König join us in this episode to tell us more about the work of the Viktor Frankl Zentrum Wien.

Mrs. Susanne Martin holds the master of arts degree in German Studies and is a logotherapy counselor.  She is assistant of the board of the Viktor Frankl Center and is responsible for coordinating and organizing all affairs of the Center.  She has been with the Center since 2007.

Mr. Karl König is a specialist in Business Education and worked for over 20 years as a sales representative in the medical field.  He also lived in the United States, in Flagstaff, Arizona, for seven years, returning to his native Austria in 2006.  Now retired from work, he is a meaning-centered counselor and voluntary team member at the Center.

The Viktor Frankl Center Vienna (Viktor Frankl Zentrum Wien) aims to preserve and disseminate the lifework of Viktor E. Frankl in all spheres of society, and to integrate the basic ideas of logotherapy into applied disciplines such as medicine, psychotherapy, philosophy, education, and economics through:

1. lectures, seminars and courses at the Centre
2. specialists who speak in companies, institutions, schools and educational centres about how to apply logotherapy in the respective fields
3. acting as a contact point for scientists, researchers, and undergraduate and graduate students from Austria and abroad
4. organizing events, video presentations and discussions at the Centre
5. organizing interdisciplinary public symposia
6. acting as a contact point for persons in psychological distress; although the VIKTOR FRANKL CENTRE is not a treatment or therapeutic facility, it can provide a list of logotherapists and physicians who are recognized psychotherapists in Austria to whom patients may be referred
7. maintaining a comprehensive library and documentation centre about the life and work of Frankl and about the international history of logotherapy, including a large selection of works from related areas
8. maintaining a media library at the Centre of audio and video recordings about logotherapy and about the life of Frankl
9. maintaining a museum and archive about Frankl’s life and work

Dmitry A. Leontiev, Ph.D., Dr.Sc., and Marshall H. Lewis, Ph.D., speak on logotherapy and positive psychology at Congress Vienna 2012: The Future of Logotherapy on March 16, 2012.  A third speaker, Rabbi Leo Abrami, also spoke on this topic, but his presentation is not available.  

An extended version of Rabbi Abrami's paper, however, is available at the link below.  For those wishing to experience the full discussion in the original order, it is recommended that Rabbi Abrami's paper be read before listening to the podcast, as the final speaker, in particular, responds to it in several ways.  Marshall Lewis's paper is also linked below.  In the actual presentation, Dr. Lewis deviated from the prepared comments to avoid duplicating the points made by Rabbi Abrami.

Marshall H. Lewis, Ph.D., is Clinical Director at Southwest Guidance Center, part of the community mental health network in the State of Kansas. He is a faculty member and board member of the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy USA and is the assistant editor of the International Forum for Logotherapy.  He serves on the science committee and editorial board at the Viktor Frankl Institute Vienna.

Dmitry A. Leontiev, Ph.D., Dr.Sc., is Professor of Psychology at Moscow State University and President of the Institute of Existential Psychology and Life Enhancement based in Moscow.  He is Vice-President of the Moscow branch of the Russian Psychological Society.  He serves on numerous boards including the International Society for Existential Psychology and Psychotherapy and the European Network for Positive Psychology.  He is associate editor of the Journal of Positive Psychology.

Dr. Leontiev has presented over 40 papers at international conferences and over 90 papers at national conferences, many of them dealing with existential psychology and positive psychology.  He is the 2004 recipient of the Viktor Frankl Foundation award given by the City of Vienna.

Dr. Leontiev is a contributor to the forthcoming Meaning in Positive and Existential Psychology edited by Alexander Batthyány and Pninit Russo-Netzer:

Matti Ameli, MS, holds masters degrees in clinical psychology and in differential and social psychology, with a post-masters specialization in human factors.  She is also a certified professional coach.  She has studied and worked in France, the United States, and Spain. She has a strong international background in psychology (having practiced for over 15 years) and in professional coaching (having practiced for over 10 years).  Matti is an accredited member of the International Association of Logotherapy and Existential Analysis at the Viktor Frankl Institute Vienna.

As a therapist and coach, her approach is practical, action-oriented, and solution-focused. Her goal is to help individuals and corporations not only to function at a ´´healthy level´´ but also to add creativity, meaning, and passion to their life (or corporate) philosophy.  Most recently, Matti published an article on logotherapy and cognitive therapy in Psychotherapy, a journal of the American Psychological Association.
