#89 Keynote Address by Dr. Steven Southwick

Dr. Steven Southwick received an MD from George Washington Medical School in 1980. He completed his psychiatry residency at Yale University School of Medicine. He is the Glenn H. Greenberg Professor of Psychiatry, PTSD, and Resilience at Yale University Medical School and Yale Child Study Center, Medical Director of the Clinical Neuroscience Diversion of the Veterans Affairs National Center for PTSD, and Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry, Mount Sinai School of Medicine. His interests include the psychology and neurobiology of psychological trauma, PTSD, and resilience to stress. He has worked with a wide range of trauma survivors including combat veterans, civilian children and adults with PTSD, and very high functioning stress resilient former prisoners of war and active duty Special Forces soldiers and Navy Seals.

Along with coauthor Dr. Dennis S. Charney, Dr. Southwick’s latest book, Resilience: The Science of Mastering Life's Greatest Challenges, has recently been published.

Most of us at some point in our lives will be struck by major traumas such as the sudden death of a loved one, a debilitating disease, assault, or a natural disaster (including the current global pandemic). Resilience refers to the ability to 'bounce back' after encountering difficulty. This book provides a guide to building emotional, mental, and physical resilience by presenting ten factors to help anyone become more resilient to life's challenges. Specific resilience factors such as facing fear, optimism, and social support are described through the experiences and personal reflections of highly resilient survivors. These survivors also describe real-life methods for practicing and benefiting from the resilience factors. As resilience is the complex product of genetic, psychological, biological, social, and spiritual factors, the authors investigate resilience from multiple scientific perspectives. They synthesize the latest literature on the topic, describe their own research on resilience, and quote from their interviews with highly resilient people.

Dr. Southwick delivered the keynote address to the 22nd World Congress on Viktor Frankl's Logotherapy, held in June 2019 in Dallas, and gave LogoTalk Radio his kind permission to record and present his remarks.

#85: Interview with Ekaterina Voulfson, Founder of the Viktor Frankl Center, St. Petersburg

Ekaterina Voulfson is a logotherapist from St. Petersburg with a clinical psychology background. She maintains a private practice specializing in single issues and holds logotherapeutic groups for adults and teenagers.

She is the founder of the Viktor Frankl Center in St. Petersburg where she is a leader of training programs on logotherapy. She organizes numerous events and projects promoting logotherapy including public lectures, logotherapy conferences, and exhibitions.

She is currently assisting with the upcoming Fourth International Congress on Viktor Frankl’s Logotherapy to be held in Moscow in August.

#83: An Operational Definition of Meaning in Health Treatment with Dr. Batya Yaniger

On Monday, March 9, 2015, Dr. Batya Yaniger gave the following presentation to the First International Congress of Viktor Frankl’s Logotherapy in Haifa, Israel. LogoTalk Radio thanks Dr. Yaniger for giving her kind permission to share the address with you.

Batya Yaniger is a teacher, supervisor, and private practitioner of logotherapy, with over 30 years experience in innovative Torah teaching. She earned her BS in social work from Loyola University and her MS and PsyD degrees in psychology from the California Coast University. She is a Diplomate Clinician in Logotherapy as well as a co-trainer of the logotherapy training program in Israel, recognized for certification by The Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy in the USA.

In the presentation that follows, Dr. Yaniger suggests an operational definition of meaning that identifies four processes at work in the search for meaning. These are (1) the ability to grasp and evaluate meaning, (2) the capacity to become aware of deeply felt longings and higher motivations, (3) the ability to envision potential meaningfulness, and (4) the ability to become one’s authentic self by answering the questions life poses.

Dr. Yaniger has worked successfully with people who have, for a variety of reasons, lost their sense of direction in life. She listens for values and strengths that put the person in touch with who they are and what is most important to them. Logotherapy's assumption that every life has a purpose and every situation can be made meaningful perfectly dovetails with Jewish principles of optimism and responsibility. Dr. Yaniger has worked with people who struggle with issues of depression, anxiety, fears and indecisiveness, helping them to access their intuitive wisdom.

Pninit Russo-Netzer, Ph.D., is a researcher at the department of Counseling and Human Development, University of Haifa and the Maytiv Center for Research and Practice in Positive Psychology, School of Psychology, Interdisciplinary Center, Israel. Her main research and practice interests focus on meaning in life, positive psychology, spirituality and spiritual development, positive change and growth. Dr. Russo-Netzer is a practitioner of positive psychology, a diplomate clinician in logotherapy, and the chair of the Logotherapy Association in Israel. She serves as academic advisor and consultant to both academic and non-academic institutions, develops training programs and curricula for various organizations, and is the co-editor of Meaning in Positive and Existential Psychology (2014), Clinical Perspectives in Meaning (2016) and Search for Meaning in the Israeli Scene (forthcoming).

Abstract of Sowing the Seeds: Searching for Meaning in the 21st Century

In the past, society’s sense of support and coherence was achieved through processes such as continuity, socialization, and transmission of traditional patterns (Buxant, Saroglou & Tesser, 2010); however, nowadays these processes are challenged by the rise of globalization and the progression towards a more individualistic and pluralistic world. Forces and processes such as industrialization, urbanization, and the decline of the moral authority of religion (Cushman, 1990) provide a context for disengagement, deconstruction of values, and loss of meaning (Moules, 2000). Existential vacuum leaves Western industrialized societies hungry for meaning more than ever (Frankl, 1969). This state of affairs is even more complex and critical in the development of children and youth. Addressing “ultimate concerns” of meaning and purpose in these critical periods through education may facilitate the development of a healthy sense of meaning, responsibility, and shaping a purposeful path, a meaningful reason for being.

This presentation will focus on Frankl’s meaning triangle (pathways to meaning) and explore its different manifestations in theory (i.e., by highlighting potential corresponding concepts within the field of positive psychology), application (i.e., by presenting insights gained from logotherapy workshops conducted in higher education), and research (i.e, by presenting an exploratory attempt to develop children’s meaning questionnaire based on Frankl’s meaning triangle).

#80: Enacted Demonstration of Logotherapy with Dr. Michael Winters and Dr. Marshall H. Lewis

Dr. Michael Winters and Dr. Marshall H. Lewis enacted a demonstration of logotherapy at World Congress XIX in Dallas, Texas in 2013.

Michael Winters earned a masters degree in counseling from Purdue University in 1987 and a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Memphis in 1991. He is a licensed psychologist in Texas.  He received the Diplomate in Logotherapy credential in 2005 and has been appointed both to the Faculty and to the Board of the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy.

Dr. Winters maintains a private practice in Houston, Texas.  He specializes in single’s issues, helping couples discover meaning in their relationships, psychological issues of weight management, and grief counseling.  He provides workshops and lectures on the search for meaning, love, marriage, happiness, change and transition, and creativity and risk. He also conducts research on meaning in relationships.

He has published professional papers and book chapters and presented papers at national and international professional conferences.  He has taught numerous courses at Purdue University, University of Memphis, Rice University, the University of Houston, and Our Lady of the Lake, Houston. Dr. Winters is past-president of the Houston Psychological Association.

Marshall H. Lewis earned a masters degree in clinical psychology from Marshall University in 1986 and a Ph.D. in Jewish-Christian Studies from the Chicago Theological Seminary in 2013. He is a licensed masters level psychologist in Kansas. He received the Diplomate in Logotherapy credential in 2011 and has been appointed to the Faculty and to the Board of the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy. He currently serves as Clinical Director of a Kansas licensed community mental health center serving four rural and frontier counties. He is a frequent presenter at national and international logotherapy conferences.

This demonstration includes a fictional portrayal of a United States Iraqi war veteran. It is no secret that the transition from combat back to civilian life is not easy. The suicide rate among veterans is twice that of the civilian population. More veterans have died by suicide than were killed in the Iraq war. The suicide rate of active duty military is about the same as the number killed by enemy action.

The Tango Yankee Project was started by Daniel Shaw to support the fight against veteran suicide. As the project grows, proceeds from the sale of Tango Yankee chips will be donated to vetted charities that work to prevent veteran suicide. #79: No Meaning Without Ultimate Meaning with Aryeh Siegel, Ph.D., Diplomate in Logotherapy

On Monday, March 9, 2015, Dr. Aryeh Siegel gave the following presentation to the First International Congress of Viktor Frankl’s Logotherapy in Israel, held in Haifa. LogoTalk Radio thanks Dr. Siegel for giving his kind permission to share the address with you.

During graduate studies in the philosophy of logic and metaphysics at M.I.T., Dr. Siegel became disillusioned with the analytic philosopher's bias toward reductionism and materialism. With the guidance of Professor Huston Smith, he began to develop a philosophy of the esoteric unity of religions that he further refined while teaching the philosophy of religion and mysticism at The William Paterson College of New Jersey and also studying psychotherapy. Having settled in Israel for over 30 years, Dr. Siegel has taught philosophy there in assorted venues, but has lately focused more on practicing and sharing the teaching of the Kabbalist Rabbi Yehuda Ashlag, which emphasizes selfless love as the way to achieve attachment to the divine. Living in the Jerusalem area as the father of five, he is currently employed as a manager of computer projects in the Israeli institute for social security, as well as working independently as a logotherapy counselor.

#78: Moscow Conference on Man’s Search for Meaning with Dr. David Guttmann

On May 30 and 31, 2015, the Moscow Institute of Psychoanalysis in cooperation with the Viktor Frankl Institute Vienna, the professional guild of psychologists, and the Austrian Cultural Forum presented an International Conference on Man's Search for Meaning.

One of the key speakers at the conference was Prof. Dr. David Guttmann. David Guttmann, DSW, is the former Dean of the School of Social Work at the University of Haifa, Israel. He is the author of several books on aging and co-editor of several other books on social work. His book entitled Logotherapy for the Helping Professional: Meaningful Social Work was published by Springer in 1996. More recently, he has published an autobiographical book entitled Homecoming, describing his youth in Hungary and the long and painful journey to his new homeland.

David Guttmann is one of the pioneers of logotherapy. He has translated three logotherapy books into Hebrew (along with Dr. Mignon Eisenberg), and has taught logotherapy in many parts of the world in formal courses, seminars, and workshops. He has been engaged in practice, teaching, research, and training in social work, gerontology, and logotherapy for the past three decades.

On Monday, March 9, 2015, Dr. Alexander Batthyány gave the following keynote address to the First International Congress of Viktor Frankl’s Logotherapy in Israel, held in Haifa. With his usual grace, Dr. Batthyány has given his kind permission for us to share the address with you.

Alexander Batthyány is President of the Viktor Frankl Institute Vienna and Director of the Viktor Frankl Archives. He is Professor and Academic Director of the Viktor Frankl Chair for Philosophy and Psychology at the University of the International Academy of Philosophy in the Principality of Liechtenstein. This chair was established by Dr. Viktor Frankl himself and represents the world’s first and only Ph.D. program in logotherapy and logotherapy-related interdisciplinary studies at a fully accredited institution of higher learning. Dr. Batthyány is also Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Vienna, Vienna Medical School.

He is widely published in the areas of the philosophy of science, logotherapy, and consciousness studies with over 50 citations to his credit. These include five monographs, six edited anthologies, and ten edited volumes the most recent being Meaning in Existential and Positive Psychology, edited with Pninit Russo-Netzer. Forthcoming works include Conscious Selves: An Argument for Brain‐Mind‐Interactionism; To Cope, To Strive, To Understand: Existential Questions in Psychology. He is Head of the Editorial Board and First Editor of the 14‐Volumes of The Collected Works of Viktor Frankl, of which the first five volumes have been published. The complete set is expected to be finished around the year 2020.

#75: Logotherapy: Its Message, Its Power, Its Glory with Dr. Teria Shantall

We are happy and honored that Dr. Teria Shantall has given her kind permission for us to share her address entitled Logotherapy: Its Message, Its Power, Its Glory. This was the opening keynote given at the First International Congress of Viktor Frankl’s Logotherapy in Israel on the morning of March 9, 2015.

Teria Shantall, PhD, trained as a clinical psychologist in South Africa, at the Tavistock Clinic in London, and studied Logotherapy with Dr Viktor Frankl at the United States International University in San Diego. Her doctorate research with Holocaust survivors was published by the Magnes Press of the Hebrew University and was entitled Life‘s Meaning in the Face of Suffering. She presently heads the training courses in Logotherapy at the University of South Africa and is head of the English training courses in Logotherapy in Israel. She was nominated for a Jewish Achiever Award in South Africa in 2003 and won different awards at the 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, and 2013 World Congresses in Logotherapy for distinguished service in promoting the work of Viktor Frankl by the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy based in the United States. She sits on the International Board of Directors of the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy based in the United States, is President of the Viktor Frankl Institute for Logotherapy in South Africa and Vice-President of the Viktor Frankl Association for Logotherapy in Israel.

Dr. Leontiev is Professor of Psychology at Moscow State University and President of the Institute of Existential Psychology and Life Enhancement based in Moscow.  He is Vice-President of the Moscow branch of the Russian Psychological Society.  He serves on numerous boards including the International Society for Existential Psychology and Psychotherapy and the European Network for Positive Psychology. He is associate editor of the Journal of Positive Psychology.

Dr. Leontiev has presented over 40 papers at international conferences and over 90 papers at national conferences, many of them dealing with existential psychology and positive psychology.  He is the 2004 recipient of the Viktor Frankl Foundation award given by the City of Vienna.

#73: Boredom, the Existential Vacuum, and Noögenic Neurosis: Causes and Cures with Dr. Stephen J. Costello

Dr. Stephen J. Costello, founder and director of the Viktor Frankl Institute of Ireland, is a philosopher, logotherapist/existential analyst, and author of multiple books on psychoanalysis, logotherapy, and philosophy. He has been lecturing philosophy and psychology for over twenty years in University College Dublin, Trinity College, and, more recently, in the Dublin Business School.

He was educated in St. Gerard's School, Castleknock College, and University College Dublin, where he read Philosophy and Spanish Language and Literature. His Master's degree in philosophy was in existentialism and his PhD degree was on psychoanalysis and hermeneutics. Subsequently, he trained at the Irish Institute of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, gaining a Diploma in Psychoanalytic Studies with a thesis on Lacan and criminology.

Dr. Costello is a Diplomate in Logotherapy and sits on the international faculty of the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy.  He is a member of the Editorial Board of the forthcoming Annual Review of Logotherapy and Existential Analysis and has published widely in The International Forum for Logotherapy.

His lecture entitled Boredom, the Existential Vacuum, and Noögenic Neurosis: Causes and Cures was given at the Second Future of Logotherapy Conference in Vienna on May 16, 2014.

#72: Clinical Efficacy of Logotherapy: An Updated Research Overview with Alexander Batthyány and Michael Thir

Alexander Batthyány is President of the Viktor Frankl Institute Vienna and Director of the Viktor Frankl Archives. He is Professor and Academic Director of the Viktor Frankl Chair for Philosophy and Psychology at the University of the International Academy of Philosophy in the Principality of Liechtenstein. This chair was established by Dr. Viktor Frankl himself and represents the world’s first and only Ph.D. program in logotherapy and logotherapy-related interdisciplinary studies at a fully accredited institution of higher learning. Dr. Batthyány is also Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Vienna, Vienna Medical School.

He is widely published in the areas of the philosophy of science, logotherapy, and consciousness studies with over 50 citations to his credit. These include five monographs, six edited anthologies, and ten edited volumes the most recent being Meaning in Existential and Positive Psychology, edited with Pninit Russo-Netzer. Forthcoming works include Conscious Selves: An Argument for Brain‐Mind‐Interactionism; To Cope, To Strive, To Understand: Existential Questions in Psychology. He is Head of the Editorial Board and First Editor of the 14‐Volumes of The Collected Works of Viktor Frankl, of which the first five volumes have been published. The complete set is expected to be finished around the year 2020.


Michael Thir is a clinical psychologist who was a student of Alexander Batthyány and is a principle organizer of The Future of Logotherapy conferences in Vienna.  He is working closely with Dr. Batthyány on the upcoming Annual Review of Logotherapy and Existential Analysis. Recently, he has completed a research report for the Austrian Ministry of Health reconfirming the clinical efficacy of logotherapy and existential analysis.

Dr. Steven M. Southwick has given us his kind permission to share his presentation Logotherapy’s Use of Resilience in the Healing Process.  This presentation was given at the Second Future of Logotherapy Conference in Vienna on May 17, 2014.

Steven M. Southwick received an MD in Psychiatry from George Washington Medical School in 1980. He completed his psychiatry residency at Yale University School of Medicine. He is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Yale University Medical School and Yale Child Study Center.  In addition, he serves as Deputy Director of the Clinical Neurosciences Division of the Department of Veterans Affairs National Center for PTSD, and is Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. His interests include the phenomenology and neurobiology of posttraumatic stress disorder and resilience, memory for traumatic events, and the longitudinal course of trauma-related psychopathology.

#70: Meaning and Disaster Mental Health with Dr. Stefan Schulenberg

On May 17, 2014, Stefan E. Schulenberg, Ph.D., delivered this presentation at the Vienna Medical Society's historic Billrothhaus during the Second Future of Logotherapy Conference. Dr. Schulenberg discusses disaster mental health, the disaster response, and the relationship between meaning and resiliency.

Dr. Schulenberg is a clinical psychologist in the State of Mississippi and a Logotherapy Diplomate. He is Associate Professor at the University of Mississippi's Psychology Department where he serves as the Executive Director of the Clinical-Disaster Research Collaborative.

Dr. Schulenberg teaches graduate courses in cognitive and personality assessment and undergraduate courses in psychology and law, abnormal psychology, disasters and mental health, and tests and measurements. His research interests include meaning and purpose in life, positive psychology, clinical and disaster psychology, psychological assessment, serious mental illness, and adolescent psychopathology in the legal context.

Dr. Schulenberg co-organizes Out of the Darkness community walks with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and serves as a disaster mental health volunteer with the American Red Cross. He was a mental health consultant on a National Science Foundation research grant issued in response to Hurricane Katrina, and currently conducts evaluation research funded by the Mississippi Department of Mental Health relating to the effects of the Gulf Oil Spill.

#69: A Practitioner’s Review of the Logotherapy Evidence Base

This presentation was delivered by Dr. Marshall H. Lewis at the Vienna Medical Society's historic Billrothhaus on May 17, 2014 during the Second Future of Logotherapy Conference. Dr. Lewis compares the published empirical evidence for the efficacy of logotherapy to the evidence-based practice guidelines of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration (SAMHSA) in the United States. Therapists gain a working knowledge of the evidence base of logotherapy and come to understand how that body of research compares to a leading standard for the determination of psychotherapy effectiveness. Suggestions are made on how logotherapists can provide practice-based evidence, including participation in a Kansas Global Initiative for Meaningful Health.

On Friday, May 16, 2014, the Department of Logotherapy at the prestigious Moscow Institute of Psychoanalysis awarded Eleonore Frankl her second honorary doctorate.  The ceremony was held in the magnificent Natural History Museum in Vienna.  Dr. Frankl’s first honorary doctorate was conferred at North Park University in Chicago in 1993.
