On May 30 and 31, 2015, the Moscow Institute of Psychoanalysis in cooperation with the Viktor Frankl Institute Vienna, the professional guild of psychologists, and the Austrian Cultural Forum presented an International Conference on Man's Search for Meaning.
One of the key speakers at the conference was Prof. Dr. David Guttmann. David Guttmann, DSW, is the former Dean of the School of Social Work at the University of Haifa, Israel. He is the author of several books on aging and co-editor of several other books on social work. His book entitled Logotherapy for the Helping Professional: Meaningful Social Work was published by Springer in 1996. More recently, he has published an autobiographical book entitled Homecoming, describing his youth in Hungary and the long and painful journey to his new homeland.
David Guttmann is one of the pioneers of logotherapy. He has translated three logotherapy books into Hebrew (along with Dr. Mignon Eisenberg), and has taught logotherapy in many parts of the world in formal courses, seminars, and workshops. He has been engaged in practice, teaching, research, and training in social work, gerontology, and logotherapy for the past three decades.
Dr. Guttmann participated in a question and answer session at the conference in Moscow. LogoTalk Radio wishes to thank Dr. Guttmann and the Moscow Institute of Psychoanalysis for making it available to our listeners.

On Sunday, May 18, 2014, the Department of Logotherapy at the Moscow Institute of Psychoanalysis awarded Dr. Elisabeth Lukas an honorary professorship at the Institute. The ceremony was held at the Billroth House of the Vienna Medical Society.

On Friday, May 16, 2014, the Department of Logotherapy at the prestigious Moscow Institute of Psychoanalysis awarded Eleonore Frankl her second honorary doctorate. The ceremony was held in the magnificent Natural History Museum in Vienna. Dr. Frankl’s first honorary doctorate was conferred at North Park University in Chicago in 1993.

This podcast shares the keynote address delivered by Prof. Dr. Alexander Batthyány at the Nineteenth World Congress on Viktor Frankl's Logotherapy held in Dallas, Texas on June 20, 2013. This address is, in my opinion, a watershed in the history of logotherapy and existential analysis. In it, Dr. Batthyány explains Viktor Frankl’s publications in historical context and outlines the contemporary challenge that logotherapy must face. Its cause is no longer a philosophical issue, but rather an empirical question with testable hypotheses derived from logotherapy. I believe that all future work in the theory and practice of logotherapy will be judged by how well that work responds to the questions and challenges raised in this lecture.
Dr. Batthyány is President of the Viktor Frankl Institute Vienna and director of the Viktor Frankl Archives. He is Professor and Academic Director of the Viktor Frankl Chair for Philosophy and Psychology at the University of the International Academy of Philosophy in the Principality of Liechtenstein. This chair was established by Dr. Viktor Frankl himself and represents the world’s first and only Ph.D. program in logotherapy and logotherapy-related interdisciplinary studies at a fully accredited institution of higher learning. Dr. Batthyány is also Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Vienna, Vienna Medical School.
He is widely published in the areas of the philosophy of science, logotherapy, and consciousness studies with over 50 citations to his credit. These including five monographs, six edited anthologies, and nine edited volumes. Forthcoming works include Conscious Selves: An Argument for Brain‐Mind‐Interactionism; To Cope, To Strive, To Understand: Existential Questions in Psychology; and Meaning in Existential and Positive Psychology. He is Head of the Editorial Board and First Editor of the 14‐Volumes of the Collected Works of Viktor Frankl, of which the first five volumes have been published. The complete set is expected to be finished around the year 2020.
Today’s podcast concludes our special presentation of the Dr. Jerry Long Lecture Series unless more material should become available. This final lecture was recorded at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, USA in 1993. This is the same lecture that we presented in January 2012 as LogoTalk Radio #37 The Dr. Jerry Long Lecture Series Part 1.
The lecture that follows is different from the earlier presentation in two ways. First, the lecture that follows is the complete audio archive. In the earlier presentation, the question and answer period that follows the lecture was removed. My intention at that time was to present the question and answer portion as a separate episode. However, in the interest of presenting this material as an historical archive, the current podcast presents the full audio.
Second, the audio has been remastered. The original audio for each of the lectures was taken from aging VHS tapes that were saved last year in digital format by Steve and Renee Feagans. They have made this material available to LogoTalk Radio for public presentation and, also, to help clean up the aging audio. After some delay due to the press of events for Congress Vienna 2012: The Future of Logotherapy, we have now been able to take further action to preserve these archives. With the help of Tatjana Vucinic, M. Sc. and Giuliano Marinkovic of Croatian Television, we believe we have made the audio as understandable as possible. Parts 2 and 3 of the Dr. Jerry Long Lecture Series have already been presented with the improved audio, making this lecture the final one to be remastered.

Today’s episode marks the 50th episode of LogoTalk Radio! This makes it something of our Golden Anniversary! It is, therefore, quite appropriate that we celebrate with a very special episode.
Today we present Part 3 of the Dr. Jerry Long Lecture Series which is nothing less than a demonstration of logotherapy itself. Dr. Long and a volunteer presented this demonstration at the Seventh World Congress on Viktor Frankl's Logotherapy held in Kansas City, MO in 1989.
For some historical context, at that time in history Dr. Bianca Hirsch was President of the Institute of Logotherapy. It was during her tenure that the Institute obtained official consent from Viktor Frankl to use his name as part of the Institute’s name. So it was at the Seventh World Congress on Logotherapy that the Institute officially became the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy.
Also during this time, Dr. Frankl credited James Crumbaugh, PhD, and Crumbaugh’s professional colleague, Rosemary Henrion, MSN, with bringing Frankl’s work into the scientific arena in the United States. Rosemary Henrion became Chairperson of the Institute’s Education and Credentialing Committee. Dr. Crumbaugh of Gulfport, Mississippi, James Yoder, PhD, of Kansas City, Kansas, and Mignon Eisenberg, PhD, of Chicago, Illinois, became Regional Directors for the Institute. Subsequently establishing residence in Haifa, Israel, Dr. Eisenberg was instrumental in establishing the Israeli Institute of Logotherapy.

Following an accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down and ended his promising baseball career, Jerry Long discovered Viktor Frankl and the book Man's Search for Meaning. He wrote a letter to Viktor Frankl and the two soon became good friends. Jerry Long became a psychologist and logotherapist and often traveled and lectured with Viktor Frankl to audiences around the world.
Jerry Long passed away in 2002.
With the kind permission of his widow, Mrs. Renee Feagans, video archives of Dr. Jerry Long have now been made available to LogoTalk Radio. This material has not been presented for more than 20 years.
