Ekaterina Voulfson is a logotherapist from St. Petersburg with a clinical psychology background. She maintains a private practice specializing in single issues and holds logotherapeutic groups for adults and teenagers.

She is the founder of the Viktor Frankl Center in St. Petersburg where she is a leader of training programs on logotherapy. She organizes numerous events and projects promoting logotherapy including public lectures, logotherapy conferences, and exhibitions.

She is currently assisting with the upcoming Fourth International Congress on Viktor Frankl’s Logotherapy to be held in Moscow in August.

Mrs. Susanne Martin and Mr. Karl König join us in this episode to tell us more about the work of the Viktor Frankl Zentrum Wien.

Mrs. Susanne Martin holds the master of arts degree in German Studies and is a logotherapy counselor.  She is assistant of the board of the Viktor Frankl Center and is responsible for coordinating and organizing all affairs of the Center.  She has been with the Center since 2007.

Mr. Karl König is a specialist in Business Education and worked for over 20 years as a sales representative in the medical field.  He also lived in the United States, in Flagstaff, Arizona, for seven years, returning to his native Austria in 2006.  Now retired from work, he is a meaning-centered counselor and voluntary team member at the Center.

The Viktor Frankl Center Vienna (Viktor Frankl Zentrum Wien) aims to preserve and disseminate the lifework of Viktor E. Frankl in all spheres of society, and to integrate the basic ideas of logotherapy into applied disciplines such as medicine, psychotherapy, philosophy, education, and economics through:

1. lectures, seminars and courses at the Centre
2. specialists who speak in companies, institutions, schools and educational centres about how to apply logotherapy in the respective fields
3. acting as a contact point for scientists, researchers, and undergraduate and graduate students from Austria and abroad
4. organizing events, video presentations and discussions at the Centre
5. organizing interdisciplinary public symposia
6. acting as a contact point for persons in psychological distress; although the VIKTOR FRANKL CENTRE is not a treatment or therapeutic facility, it can provide a list of logotherapists and physicians who are recognized psychotherapists in Austria to whom patients may be referred

Dmitry A. Leontiev, Ph.D., Dr.Sc., is Professor of Psychology at Moscow State University and President of the Institute of Existential Psychology and Life Enhancement based in Moscow.  He is Vice-President of the Moscow branch of the Russian Psychological Society.  He serves on numerous boards including the International Society for Existential Psychology and Psychotherapy and the European Network for Positive Psychology.  He is associate editor of the Journal of Positive Psychology.

Dr. Leontiev has presented over 40 papers at international conferences and over 90 papers at national conferences, many of them dealing with existential psychology and positive psychology.  He is the 2004 recipient of the Viktor Frankl Foundation award given by the City of Vienna.

Dr. Leontiev is a contributor to the forthcoming Meaning in Positive and Existential Psychology edited by Alexander Batthyány and Pninit Russo-Netzer:

Matti Ameli, MS, holds masters degrees in clinical psychology and in differential and social psychology, with a post-masters specialization in human factors.  She is also a certified professional coach.  She has studied and worked in France, the United States, and Spain. She has a strong international background in psychology (having practiced for over 15 years) and in professional coaching (having practiced for over 10 years).  Matti is an accredited member of the International Association of Logotherapy and Existential Analysis at the Viktor Frankl Institute Vienna.

As a therapist and coach, her approach is practical, action-oriented, and solution-focused. Her goal is to help individuals and corporations not only to function at a ´´healthy level´´ but also to add creativity, meaning, and passion to their life (or corporate) philosophy.  Most recently, Matti published an article on logotherapy and cognitive therapy in Psychotherapy, a journal of the American Psychological Association.

In the podcast that follows, you will hear Dr. McQuillan’s presentation given to the Nineteenth World Congress on Viktor Frankl’s Logotherapy on June 22, 2013 in Dallas, Texas. Dr. McQuillan presents the story of Storm, a woman who has emerged from the trauma of domestic violence with the help of logotherapy. Dr Paul McQuillan is a Faculty Member of the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy and a practicing family and relationships counselor with Anglicare South Queensland.  He has been an Honorary Fellow of Australian Catholic University since 2002. Through Life Change Therapies he provides face the face and online courses in Logotherapy in Australia. (www.lifechange.net.au)

Dr. McQuillan is a member of the International Seminar on Religious Education and Values. The seminar meets bi-annually and is restricted to members and invited guests.  He is Chair of the Education Program Accreditation Committee of the Psychotherapists and Counsellors Federation of Australia. The role of the committee is to accredit training in psychotherapy and counseling provided by Universities and other training organizations. He sits on the Editorial Board of "Panorama: Intercultural Annual of Interdisciplinary Ethical and Religious Studies for Responsible Research" and the Editorial Board of "The Journal of Youth Ministry."

His research interests include religious experience and the spirituality of youth as well as meaning centered therapy and the logotherapy of Viktor Frankl.

His previous career has centered on education and educational leadership.  He has been the principal of high schools in three states, assistant director for resources and planning for Northern Territory Catholic Education, and, for 12 years, Director, Administrative Services, for Brisbane Catholic Education.

Dr. McQuillan is the author of numerous journal articles, book chapters and books on the topic of spirituality and belief systems of young people.

Snezhana A. Zamalieva, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist, business coach, and President of the Maestro Temirkanov International Foundation for Cultural Initiatives (Международный Фонд Культурных Инициатив Маэстро Темирканова).  She graduated from St. Petersburg State University with a master's degree in sociology in 1996 and received her MBA in 2003.  Later, she graduated from the East European Institute for Psychoanalysis with a master's degree in psychology.  In 2012 she earned her Ph.D. from the Philosophy Department of St. Petersburg State University.  Dr. Zamalieva also completed the program in Franklian Psychology offered by the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy, in Texas, by distance learning.

She is the author of numerous articles and a monograph entitled Человек все решает сам : логотерапия и экзистенциальная антропология Виктора Франкла (Man Decides for Himself: Viktor Frankl's Logotherapy and Existential Anthropology).  This is the first book by a Russian author to summarize the main tenets of logotherapy and to present the life of Viktor Frankl, making it an important historical publication.

Dr. Stephen J. Costello has given his kind permission for LogoTalk Radio to present his lecture entitled Saying Yes to Life in Spite of Everything.  This was the keynote address at a seminar entitled Suicide and the Search for Meaning: Answers from Viktor Frankl’s Logotherapy held at the European Parliament Buildings in Dublin on November 17, 2012.

Dr. Costello, founder and director of the Viktor Frankl Institute of Ireland, is a philosopher, logotherapist/existential analyst, and author. He has been lecturing philosophy and psychology for over twenty years in University College Dublin, Trinity, and, more recently, in the Dublin Business School.

He was educated in St. Gerard's School, Castleknock College, and University College Dublin, where he read Philosophy and Spanish Language and Literature. His Master's degree in philosophy was in existentialism and his PhD degree was on psychoanalysis and hermeneutics.  Subsequently, he trained at the Irish Institute of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, gaining a Diploma in Psychoanalytic Studies with a thesis on Lacan and criminology.

Dr. Costello is a Diplomate in Logotherapy and sits on the international faculty of the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy.  He is a board member of the International Association of Institutions for Training and Research in Logotherapy and Existential Analysis. He has published widely in the International Forum for Logotherapy. Dr. Costello also acts as coadjutor of the London Chapter of the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy.

Ann V. Graber is Fellow, Professor of Pastoral Logotherapy, and Director of the Graduate Center for Pastoral Logotherapy at the Graduate Theological Foundation. This educational initiative is the first of its kind by a graduate-level institution focused specifically upon the pastoral character of the theory and practice of Viktor Frankl’s logotherapy being offered to ministry professionals.

Growing up in Europe, Ann Graber received most of her primary, secondary, and initial post-secondary education in Austria. Later she continued her higher education in the U.S. Upon earning the Diplomate in Logotherapy credential, she joined the international faculty of the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy and participated in developing a comprehensive curriculum in Franklian Psychology/Logotherapy in the English language.  She also initiated and directed the Institute’s Distance Learning Program that has attracted students interested in logotherapy from every continent. A life-time member of the Viktor Frankl Institute, Dr. Graber serves as liaison between the Institute and the Foundation.

In 2002, after completing her Ph.D. studies at the Graduate Theological Foundation, Dr. Graber was invited to join the Foundation faculty. She has taught Foundation Seminars and Institutes on Viktor Frankl’s logotherapy on-site, as well as E-tutorials, telephone tutorials, and residential tutorials. A frequent presenter at regional and international conferences, Dr. Graber has received numerous awards through the years. Her articles have been published in Foundation Theology: Faculty Essays for Ministry Professionals, The International Forum for Logotherapy, A Chrysalis Reader, and other publications. Some of her work has been translated (whole or in part) into foreign languages. In 2009, the Graduate Theological Foundation awarded the degree of Doctor of Divinity honoris causa to Ann V. Graber in recognition of distinguished service and internationally recognized scholarship in Viktor Frankl’s logotherapy. When the Foundation decided to establish the Graduate Center for Pastoral Logotherapy in 2012, Dr. Graber was honored to be asked to serve as its Director.

Ann V. Our guest today on LogoTalk Radio is Mr. Robert Ekstrom, a long time participant in the World Congresses hosted by the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy.  Many will know him simply as "the Turtleman" because of his habit of brightening people’s days by giving them a small, carved, stone turtle.  I met Mr. Ekstrom about four years ago and, sure enough, he gave me a little green turtle.  I think I was lucky to get a green one.  It has sat on my desk since reminding me of the World Congress.

This is truly one of LogoTalk Radio's most charming and fun interviews.  Mr. Ekstrom's spirit of love for people shines through.  He is sure to touch your life in this interview.

Today's guest on LogoTalk Radio is Edward Marshall, Ph.D., Diplomate in Logotherapy, President of the Canadian Institute of Logotherapy, and author of the new book Logotherapy Revisited: Review of the Tenets of Viktor E. Frankl’s Logotherapy.

Dr. Edward Marshall completed his Medical Degree at the University of Navarra, Spain, and practiced Family Medicine in the Canary Islands, Spain. He earned his Master's Degree in Emergency Medicine, from the University of La Laguna, Spain. His Doctor in Medicine and Surgery (Ph.D. in Neuroscience) Degree is from the University of La Laguna, Spain. His Doctoral Dissertation focused on the neurophysiology of the visual system. He completed his residency in Psychiatry and earned his Post-graduate Diploma in Clinical Psychiatry at the University of Leeds, UK. He practiced as Psychiatrist at St. James' Psychiatric Hospital, Portsmouth, UK. Since moving to Canada, he has been practicing Psychotherapy. He completed the Diplomate Clinician in Logotherapy credential with the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy.

Dr. Edward Marshall, along with his wife Dr. Maria Marshall, founded the Canadian Institute of Logotherapy, Ottawa, Canada.  They are also authors of the new book Logotherapy Revisited which has been published since our interview was recorded.

Logotherapy Revisited: Review of the Tenets of Viktor E. Frankl's Logotherapy

Dr. Marshall was one of the first people I became aware of in logotherapy when I began to study it and shortly after I started LogoTalk simply because of the similarity of our names, Marshall being his family name and my given name.  We are both on Facebook, both on Twitter, and so the search engines constantly pulled us up together when the words “marshall” and “logotherapy” became associated.

However, I only met Dr. Marshall this year, and in Vienna rather than North America.  While having breakfast one morning at that the Hotel Regina, Dr. Marshall approached me and introduced himself.  I recognized him, of course, from pictures on the internet.  It seems that he had a message for me that someone had left with the hotel, though it had been routed to him instead of to me, again due the similarity of our names.  We then, of course, shared breakfast, pleasant conversation about the future of logotherapy, and, at some point, visited the Sigmund Freud Museum together along with some other colleagues.

So, finally, Marshall has the opportunity to interview Dr. Marshall on Logotalk!

Dr. Marshall was a presenter at Congress Vienna 2012 The Future of Logotherapy in March.

Today's guest on LogoTalk Radio is Mr. Ferhat Jak Icoz, MBPsS, Associate in Logotherapy

Ferhat Jak Icoz was born in Istanbul, Turkey, and took a classical education at Österreichisches Sankt-Georgs Kolleg - Gymnasium u. Handelsakademie (Austrian Sankt- Georg High School). He studied Psychology, Media Studies and Hebrew Literature at Istanbul Bilgi University, Turkey and Vassar College, N.Y., and was granted a B.A. degree with Summa Cum Laude in Psychology from Istanbul Bilgi University. He enrolled in the graduate program in Clinical Psychology at Istanbul Bilgi University and expects to graduate this summer. In his graduate studies, he has taken a psychoanalytically-psychodynamically oriented clinical approach with an integrative emphasis with existential and humanistic approaches. He aspires to pursue further education at the doctoral level in psychotherapy. In addition to this, he is studying International Management at the University of Liverpool, expecting to receive a M.Sc. degree within a year.

He has been admitted to the Doctor of Psychology program in Existential Psychotherapies and Counseling at Middlesex University in London, UK, where he will be relocating in September.

He has recently completed and finalized his diplomate work in logotherapy, and it was approved by Dr. Ann V. Graber just before Congress Vienna. Its topic is "Meaningful Inter-Group Dynamics Through Logotherapy: Boosting Inter- Group Relations Through Awareness Raising Modules Based on Logotherapy."  This involves the use Logotherapy in peace-building through creating educational modules based on Logotherapy.  This project will be presented to the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy at the 19th World Congress on Viktor Frankl’s Logotherapy scheduled to be held in Dallas, Texas in 2013.

Professionally, he is recognized as a psychologist by the Turkish Psychological Association, as an MBPsS by the British Psychological Society and as an academic associate by the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy.

He has taken psychotherapy education in Gestalt Psychotherapy, Psychodrama and Logotherapy - Existential Analysis. Along with these, he is trained as a yoga instructor and a trainer-educator.

He is fluent in English, Turkish, German and Italian, and can communicate in French and Hebrew at limited working proficiency level.

Mental Health Awareness on Talk Sense Radio

In light of the recent shooting in Aurora, Colorado and the media frenzy surrounding this case, Talk Sense Radio - The Meaning Connection with Mary Cimiluca interviewed me on various topics related to mental health awareness. 

Key points include the lack of conclusive evidence that mental illness disposes a person to violence, but that mental illness, substance abuse and a history of violence raises the risk of violence by a factor of ten - a Violence Triad, so to speak.

Additional topics will include: what is mental illness and how do we recognize it?  What are the warning signs of pending escalation of symptoms?  Can we predict when danger will turn to violence?  How can those who have been diagnosed with mental illness avoid stigma?  What is mental first-aid? and much, much more.

Today's guest on LogoTalk Radio is Rabbi Tani Burton, MSW, Diplomate in Logotherapy

Tani is a graduate of Yeshiva University in New York City where he obtained his master of social work degree as well as his rabbinic ordination.  He has also undergone formal institute training through the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy with Dr. Teria Shantall, who was a student of Viktor Frankl’s.

With over 10 years of experience as a therapist, Tani now maintains a private practice in clinical social work and logotherapy specializing in individual, couples and family therapy.  He practices in Jerusalem, Bet Shemesh and Yad Binyamin, Israel.

In addition to private practice, he has worked in various agency settings, and has presented at national conferences and to general audiences speaking on the topics of sexual abuse and community interventions.  He has worked at Jewish Family Services in Clifton/Passaic, doing child-centered play therapy as well as geriatric and immigration case management, and was the therapeutic director of Netsach, a yeshiva program in Jerusalem for at-risk young men.  He is trained in the treatment of sexual offenders and co-facilitating forensic therapy groups at an organization created to deal with the phenomenon of sexual abuse in the religious community.

Tani is an integrative, meaning-oriented therapist. His therapeutic approach is to provide support and practical feedback to help clients effectively address personal life challenges. He brings together complementary methodologies and techniques to offer a highly personalized approach tailored to each person. Tani believes that compassion and understanding are the real tools to help people build on their strengths and attain the personal growth that life has set out for them.

In March 2012, at the historic Billroth House of the Vienna Medical Society, Tani lectured at Congress Vienna 2012: The Future of Logotherapy.  The title of his presentation was "Bringing Conscience into the Process:  A Meaning Analysis of Sexual Abuse and Current Trends in Research and Treatment."

Dr. Costello, founder and director of the Viktor Frankl Institute of Ireland, is a philosopher, logotherapist/existential analyst and author. He has been lecturing philosophy and psychology for over twenty years in University College Dublin, Trinity and, more recently, in the Dublin Business School. 

He was educated in St. Gerard's School, Castleknock College and University College Dublin, where he read Philosophy and Spanish Language and Literature. His Master's degree in philosophy (1990) was in existentialism and his PhD degree (1994), carried out under the supervision of Professor Richard Kearney, was on psychoanalysis (Freud) and hermeneutics (Ricoeur).

Dr. Costello was awarded two gold medals for debating in UCD and holds a black belt in Aikido and an equivalent in Wing Tsun Kung Fu. Subsequently, he trained at the Irish Institute of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, gaining a Diploma in Psychoanalytic Studies (now an MSc from Trinity) in 1996 with a thesis on Lacan and criminology.

For a number of years Dr. Costello was a member of the Association for Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy in Ireland, attached to the School of Psychotherapy in St. Vincent's Hospital. He is a Diplomate in Logotherapy (awarded in 2009) and sits on the international faculty of the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy and is a board member of the International Association of Institutions for Training and Research in Logotherapy and Existential Analysis. He has published widely in the International Forum for Logotherapy. Dr. Costello also acts as coadjutor of the London Chapter of the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy. 

He is the author of The Irish Soul: In Dialogue, The Pale Criminal: Psychoanalytic Perspectives, 18 Reasons Why Mothers Hate Their Babies: A Philosophy of Childhood, Hermeneutics and the Psychoanalysis of Religion, The Ethics of Happiness: An Existential Analysis, What are Friends For?: Insights from the Great Philosophers and of the forthcoming Philosophy and the Flow of Presence: Desire, Drama and the Divine Ground of Being. He edited Credo: Faith and Philosophy in Contemporary Ireland and The Search for Spirituality: Seven Paths Within the Catholic Tradition.

On March 17, 2012, at the historic Billroth House of the Vienna Medical Society, Dr. Costello lectured on the Meaning of Logotherapy as part of Congress Vienna 2012:  The Future of Logotherapy.

Tatjana Vucinic, MSc, known in the art world as Tanja Vu, is a Croatian psychologist, editor and poet who writes music and sings her poetry.  Most of her poems deal with eternal subjects such as human spirituality, inner explorations, unconditional love and the importance of bringing hope and feelings of limitless possibilities.

Tanja holds the Master of Science degree in Health Psychology from Leiden University in The Netherlands.  She lives and works in her native Zagreb, Croatia.  Tanja believes that Croatia has a great hunger for more knowledge of Viktor Frankl’s work and notes that interest in the area of personal meaning is growing in her country.  Frankl's books are extremely popular among Croatians.

Tanja is author of The Whisperer, a book of meaning-centered poetry recently published on Amazon.com.

Dr. Kuo Liu Hsiu is originally from Taiwan.  She has lived and studied in Germany and completed a Doctoral degree in Music in the U.S.  She plays many instruments and her music has allowed her to perform all over the world, most memorably for Mikhail Gorbachev and the Queen of Jordan.  Dr. Kuo also played at the 50th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and the 50th anniversary of the founding of Israel, as well as a Middle East peace concert.  She has played to accompany poetry, dance and films.  Her experience includes touring and producing CD collections for commercial release.  Most recently, Dr. Kuo was a visiting professor in China during the 2007 school year.  While there she started the first music therapy concerts in southwest China to assist those with trauma from the 2008 earthquake.

Dr. Kuo also played the harp during the 2011 awards ceremony of the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy (USA) where I first heard her perform live.

Lui Hsiu is the originator of the The MusicMap, a project grounded in logotherapy and which seeks to discover meaning through music. The MusicMap™© project has two goals: the first is to help people know themselves better by recalling how music has affected them throughout their lives; the second is to help the public to be aware of their sound environment and the proper use of music for wellbeing.

During this year’s World Congress, I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Renee Feagans and her husband.  I learned that she listens to LogoTalk Radio before the World Congresses to get herself in the mood for the conferences.  Mrs. Feagans has been a guest at many of the World Congresses and has an involvement in logotherapy dating back several years.  

Now happily remarried, Mrs. Feagans was previously married to Dr. Jerry Long, an iconic name in the history of logotherapy who passed away in 2002.

While recovering from an accident that left him paralyzed from the chest down, Dr. Long wrote a letter to Viktor Frankl.  They soon became friends and, eventually, colleagues.  Dr. Long often appeared with Dr. Frankl at events around the world.  Dr. Frankl frequently spoke of Jerry Long's life as "a living testimony to logotherapy lived and the defiant power of the human spirit."
