#56: The Russian Philosophical Heritage and its Impact on Franklian Philosophy – Presentation by Snezhana A. Zamalieva, Ph.D.




Snezhana A. Zamalieva, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist, business coach and President of the Maestro Temirkanov International Foundation for Cultural Initiatives (Международный Фонд Культурных Инициатив Маэстро Темирканова).  She graduated from St. Petersburg State University with a master's degree in sociology in 1996 and received her MBA in 2003.  Later, she graduated from the East European Institute for Psychoanalysis with a master's degree in psychology.  In 2012 she earned her Ph.D. from the Philosophy Department of St. Petersburg State University.  Dr. Zamalieva also completed the program in Franklian Psychology offered by the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy, in Texas, by distance learning.

She is the author of numerous articles and a monograph entitled Человек все решает сам : логотерапия и экзистенциальная антропология Виктора Франкла (Man Decides for Himself: Viktor Frankl's Logotherapy and Existential Anthropology).  This is the first book by a Russian author to summarize the main tenets of logotherapy and to present the life of Viktor Frankl, making it an important historical publication.

Dr. Zamalieva lectured at the Nineteenth World Congress on Viktor Frankl's Logotherapy in Dallas, Texas on June 21, 2013.  Here, she presents an overview of Russian philosophy for her international audience and then discusses the influence of Russian philosophy, especially Dostoyevsky and Tolstoy, on the development of Viktor Frankl's thought.

#55: The Cognitive Neurosciences and Logotherapy: New Experimental Findings and Their Implications – Keynote Address by Professor Alexander Batthyány, Ph.D.




This podcast shares the keynote address delivered by Prof. Dr. Alexander Batthyány at the Nineteenth World Congress on Viktor Frankl's Logotherapy held in Dallas, Texas on June 20, 2013.  This address is, in my opinion, a watershed in the history of logotherapy and existential analysis.  In it, Dr. Batthyány explains Viktor Frankl’s publications in historical context and outlines the contemporary challenge that logotherapy must face.  Its cause is no longer a philosophical issue, but rather an empirical question with testable hypotheses derived from logotherapy.  I believe that all future work in the theory and practice of logotherapy will be judged by how well that work responds to the questions and challenges raised in this lecture.

Dr. Batthyány is President of the Viktor Frankl Institute Vienna and director of the Viktor Frankl Archives.  He is Professor and Academic Director of the Viktor Frankl Chair for Philosophy and Psychology at the University of the International Academy of Philosophy in the Principality of Liechtenstein.  This chair was established by Dr. Viktor Frankl himself and represents the world’s first and only Ph.D. program in logotherapy and logotherapy-related interdisciplinary studies at a fully accredited institution of higher learning.  Dr. Batthyány is also Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Vienna, Vienna Medical School.

He is widely published in the areas of the philosophy of science, logotherapy, and consciousness studies with over 50 citations to his credit.  These including five monographs, six edited anthologies, and nine edited volumes.  Forthcoming works include Conscious Selves: An Argument for Brain‐Mind‐Interactionism; To Cope, To Strive, To Understand: Existential Questions in Psychology; and Meaning in Existential and Positive Psychology.  He is Head of the Editorial Board and First Editor of the 14‐Volumes of the Collected Works of Viktor Frankl, of which the first five volumes have been published.  The complete set is expected to be finished around the year 2020.

#54: Logotherapy and Existential Hermeneutics: Background

Next week at World Congress XIX on Viktor Frankl's Logotherapy: Inspiring Meaning-Centered Living in Diverse Disciplines, Cultures and Wisdom Traditions, I have the privilege of presenting From Turmoil to Transcendence:  The Book of Job and the Will to Wisdom based on my recently completed PhD dissertation on logotherapy and hermeneutics.  During that presentation, I intend to outline what a logotherapy hermeneutic is, and then engage logotherapy in a dialogue with the Biblical Book of Job.  I find the discoveries both about the Book of Job and about logotherapy to be quite startling.  

Spiral bound, paper-only copies of the dissertation will also be available at the World Congress bookstore for $20.00. There are only 15 copies available, so I’ll accept pre-orders by email to logotalk@gmail.com.

In this podcast, I share a bit of background on what a hermeneutic is, and what it has to do with logotherapy.  I also talk about types of hermeneutics, as well as postmodernism, and explore how Frankl’s theory fits with those constructs.  Most of this material will not be part of the presentation next week, and both this episode and the presentation are free-standing, but listening to this episode before the presentation will give those who attend a fuller understanding of the overall project.

#53: Saying Yes to Life in Spite of Everything by Stephen J. Costello, PhD



Dr. Stephen J. Costello has given his kind permission for LogoTalk Radio to present his lecture entitled Saying Yes to Life in Spite of Everything.  This was the keynote address at a seminar entitled Suicide and the Search for Meaning: Answers from Viktor Frankl’s Logotherapy held at the European Parliament Buildings in Dublin on November 17, 2012.

Dr. Costello, founder and director of the Viktor Frankl Institute of Ireland, is a philosopher, logotherapist/existential analyst, and author. He has been lecturing philosophy and psychology for over twenty years in University College Dublin, Trinity, and, more recently, in the Dublin Business School.

He was educated in St. Gerard's School, Castleknock College, and University College Dublin, where he read Philosophy and Spanish Language and Literature. His Master's degree in philosophy was in existentialism and his PhD degree was on psychoanalysis and hermeneutics.  Subsequently, he trained at the Irish Institute of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, gaining a Diploma in Psychoanalytic Studies with a thesis on Lacan and criminology.

Dr. Costello is a Diplomate in Logotherapy and sits on the international faculty of the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy.  He is a board member of the International Association of Institutions for Training and Research in Logotherapy and Existential Analysis. He has published widely in the International Forum for Logotherapy. Dr. Costello also acts as coadjutor of the London Chapter of the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy.

He is the author of multiple books on psychoanalysis, logotherapy, and philosophy, including the forthcoming Philosophy and the Flow of Presence: Desire, Drama and the Divine Ground of Being.

#52: The Song of Melancholy: Depression and the Search for Meaning by Stephen J. Costello, PhD

#51 The Dr. Jerry Long Lecture Series Part 4





Today’s podcast concludes our special presentation of the Dr. Jerry Long Lecture Series unless more material should become available.  This final lecture was recorded at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, USA in 1993.  This is the same lecture that we presented in January 2012 as LogoTalk Radio #37 The Dr. Jerry Long Lecture Series Part 1.

The lecture that follows is different from the earlier presentation in two ways.  First, the lecture that follows is the complete audio archive.  In the earlier presentation, the question and answer period that follows the lecture was removed.  My intention at that time was to present the question and answer portion as a separate episode.  However, in the interest of presenting this material as an historical archive, the current podcast presents the full audio.

Second, the audio has been remastered.  The original audio for each of the lectures was taken from aging VHS tapes that were saved last year in digital format by Steve and Renee Feagans. They have made this material available to LogoTalk Radio for public presentation and, also, to help clean up the aging audio.  After some delay due to the press of events for Congress Vienna 2012:  The Future of Logotherapy, we have now been able to take further action to preserve these archives.  With the help of Tatjana Vucinic, M. Sc. and Giuliano Marinkovic of Croatian Television, we believe we have made the audio as understandable as possible.  Parts 2 and 3 of the Dr. Jerry Long Lecture Series have already been presented with the improved audio, making this lecture the final one to be remastered.

The new audio tracks have also been added to digitized video for each of the lectures and the demonstration of logotherapy.  The full audio and video archives are available at youtube.com/logotalk.
